Instinct stars Alan Cumming as a former CIA operative who is lured back to his old life when the NYPD needs his help to stop a serial killer. Dr. Dylan Reinhart is a gifted author and university professor living a quiet life teaching psychopathic behavior to packed classes of adoring students. But when tenacious top NYPD detective Lizzie Needham appeals to him to help her catch a serial murderer who is using Dylan's first book as a tutorial, Dylan is compelled by the case and comes out of retirement. Helping them is Julian Cousins, Dylan's invaluable CIA comrade who rivals Dylan in brilliance and wit, and can get top-secret dirt on anyone, anywhere, anytime. Lizzie's boss, Lt. Jasmine Gooden, is glad to see her best detective finally agree to work with someone on a case, since Lizzie has refused any partner since a tragic event one year ago. But as Dylan feels reenergized tapping into his old skill set, his husband, Andy, is concerned that Dylan's breaking their pact about putting away his cloak and dagger for good. Though Dylan and Lizzie initially clash, when it comes to catching killers, they realize they will make an ideal team if they both trust their instincts. Based on the James Patterson novel.

  • Potential, but....

It’s a good concept, and one good key actor ... but if it’s gonna fly, the writing and directing needs to find some magic. And I am optimistic that a love tension thing between the main characters is it going to become part of things. That has just become too common.
  • Needs something. A spark

Wasn’t bad. Wasn’t great. It has potential to be great. Problem is you can’t hold a show without s*xual tension between characters. There is none in this. So why watch. He’s the stories are good but there is no payoff. Won’t last because of this.
  • Very good actor, terrible, terrible writing

  • Alan Cumming is terrific!

So this is a CBS procedural. It’s supposed to be familiar comfort TV. I definitely see the DNA of Castle or Bones in this show (I mean that as a compliment!) but think it’s doing something fresh as well. Mainly Alan Cummings. He clearly is having a lot of fun playing this role. And good on CBS for airing the first network drama with a lead gay character. I like that this will not be a will they/won’t they show. Sure I love a good romance but a show about friendship is too often forgotten on TV. My only misgiving on the show is if it is only about serial killers. I’m hoping the pilot isn’t the template for every case. Apart from that, I look forward to watching more episodes.
  • Soooo tired of serial killers - serial cliche

Oi. What a waste. yet ANOTHER smart guy trying to get into the head of a SICK in the head guy. BORING! Done to death. PLEASE, writers, producers, try something new?

Agree with other fellow commenters, writing is bad, a pity for the actors
  • Not original, but still fun.

This is a shameless knock off of both Elementary and Castle, even right down to the closing music. Both main characters have such unoriginal and cliche backstories, but it is an interesting show and Alan Cummings is good in just about everything he does, so I'll be adding this to the list of weekly shows I watch for sure.
  • Good start...

Not perfect yet (more of a 4 1/2 stars) but getting there (hopefully). The chemistry between the two main actors isn't 100% right yet. Not a fan of the (spolier alert) gay male protagonist role because it excludes any chance of a romantic involvement between the two main characters, which is a pity. Oh well, maybe he is going to be bisexual (as he claims he is in real life), so we're good. LOL On a more serious note, the show has potential and I hope it is going to be fun.
  • Nearly unwatchable

There were once three separate CSI shows and three separate L&0 shows on tv. Were literally none of those writers available? The writing on this show is bad. BAD. It's wholly cliche, overwrought, and sounds absolutely nothing like human dialogue. Compounded with the fact that the actress playing the lead detective is utterly, unforgivably atrocious at delivering a line, let alone basic emotion, this is probably a show you can skip.
  • A Lot of Fun!

I really enjoyed the pilot especially Alan Cummings. Can't wait for more episodes.
