An unflinching psychological thriller amidst the underbelly of New York City’s “Gilded Age,” The Alienist follows Laszlo Kreizler (Daniel Brühl, Rush), a brilliant and obsessive “Alienist” in the controversial new field of treating mental pathologies, who holds the key to hunting down a never-before-seen ritualistic killer murdering young boys. Based on the award-winning, fan-favorite novel by Caleb Carr, with standout performances from Luke Evans (The Girl on the Train) and Dakota Fanning (American Pastoral) The Alienist is a gripping, turn-of-the-century murder mystery like none other: the story of the emergence of the world’s most powerful city that will stop at nothing to bury its darkest secrets.

  • Feels Very Holmesian

    By raikenclw
As others have said, kudos for the production values. This show feels a good Conan Doyle novel brought to life, but with a different set of characters. I don't understand the poster upthread who complained that no motivations were shown. Dr. Kriezler's motivations are obvious: he is both fascinated by the minds of children and also feels guilty about the unsolved murder of the Zwiez boy. [He's also very Holmes-like]. Sara's motivation is equally obvious: she's a feminist and a career woman in a time when such a thing was truly rare [Doyle's Irene Adler as a cop]. Moore's motivation is the clearest of all; he's an everyman who's trying his best to help a rather weird friend (John Watson as a whoremonger). What's not to like?

This is such a brilliant show!
  • Really Excellent

I have had a tough time understanding the cool change within entertainment wherein certain short run television series can be as powerful as one long great motion picture. The nexus of this series being basically ‘Jack the Ripper’ in New York; is enough to check out the time frame and vibe of this show. Even though the acting can be a little stiff; Bruhl is amazing as the doctor or ‘Alienist’. The attention to detail is similar to ‘Taboo’ with Tom Hardy. In other words; very exacting and macabre. I actually am waiting for each new episode with interest rarely this strong for this motif. Definitely not a family show due to the nature of the story. But if you are a fan of ‘From Hell’ then enjoy this strange view of pseudo history.
  • Over The Top Time Waster

I’ll give this series an extra star for set production. Otherwise, after 4 episodes in, it just doesn’t keep your attention. There is not ONE likable character. This show was overly advertised for months before it debuted (clearly somebody had faith in it). When I went to LA on the release week it was on every bus/billboard/park bench... so I started it. It’s downfall is the acting. SO OVER dramatic. It’s like watching a bad local theatre production. The leads are so ridiculously over dramatic. My partner and I even mock it around the house while having regular conversations that we “Alienist-ate”. A genuine fail. Ridiculously over-acted and not a single character that intrigues (except the mute servant woman).
  • Way to aim for the middle

Want a GOOD period cop show? Try the German-language BABYLON BERLIN on Netflix. Daniel Brühl and the production values are the only good things about this. It’s heavy-handed and spoon-fed like everything Turner produces. There’s no effort to explain the motivations of any of the major characters, even halfway through the second episode. The source material isn’t the greatest, but anyone could’ve improved upon the Carr novel. Pass.
  • Meh...nothing to write home about.

Didn't knock my socks off, didn't bore me. First episode spent way too much time on the "gritty realism" (which always feels fake) of the time, and failed to engage the characters with the audience. Dakota Fanning is the only reason I'll be tuning into Episode 2..... which was boring AF.
  • An amazing soundtrack.

This a dark and sometimes disturbing psychological thriller. The amazing sets and costuming is excellently done. I love the soundtrack and hope they eventually release it for purchase. The story is well cast with great actors. I'm excited to see how the story continues.

  • First episode does not work

Downloaded the first episode. It plays herky jerky for 5 or ten seconds and then the picture freezes but the sound goes on. I get similar results trying to stream it. The freebies work just fine. Not a good start for this series on iTunes.
