Academy Award® winner Gary Oldman gives a “towering performance” (Richard Lawson, Vanity Fair) in acclaimed director Joe Wright’s soaring drama DARKEST HOUR. As Hitler’s forces storm across the European landscape and close in on the United Kingdom, Winston Churchill (Oldman) is elected the new Prime Minister. With his party questioning his every move, and King George VI (Ben Mendelsohn) skeptical of his new political leader, it is up to Churchill to lead his nation and protect them from the most dangerous threat ever seen. Also starring Academy Award® nominee Kristin Scott Thomas and Lily James, DARKEST HOUR is a powerful, inspirational drama.

  • Impossible

Like any truly great person, it is impossible to capture the measure of Churchill on filme. Gary Oldman was deserved of an Oscar long ago and it could be argued that this was not his best (Coppola's Dracula) but notwithstanding, the filme educates and adorns the man who did save Western Civilization (stunning) with a certain fraility and humane (ness) which is oft left aside to the more severe views of this Giant of a man. The King's role is prescient as are his lines and methinks the filme lines up rightly for the British Empire, perhaps not as much for the viewers. Nonetheless it is elegant and meaningful. Capturing true greatness is nary impossilbe. It is a fleeting as the Spring...

This is the best movie I’ve seen in a number of years. It gripped my attention from start to finish. I watched it two evenings in a row. Oldman’s performance was superb.

Gary Oldman is excellent in this role. The movie keeps you on the edge of your seat. Awesome!
  • Fake

While Gary Oldman did an excellent job portraying Winston Churchill, the actuall history is entirely suspect (particularly the subway scene) in that it never happened.
  • Amazing!

I regret not buying this film because all the scenes are incredible and the acting by Gary Oldman is outstanding. This film will inspire you no matter what situation you are in. I was crying when Churchill says the poem in the train and then cries - those words are so deep yet so true! His oratory in the speech to parliament is so inspirational and emotional as well. Brilliant movie - Defintely recommend!
  • Let me tell you about my darkest hour!

The Brits would be speaking lower-class German it hadn't been for the Americans in WWII. When I arrived in London for a rock and roll vacation in 2008, the royalists threw me in prison ("detention") for two months. I possessed a valid passport but an airport guard fabricated an immigration charge (as if I was really planning on an extended stay with pompous snobs, crappy food, and lousy weather). I had wanted to do a tour of rock and roll sites, but apparently they don't like the Beatles after all. During my prison vacation prison officials routinely lied to me, insulted me, verbally abused me, and one fat female guard body-slammed me in a hallway because she was bored. After much hell-raising I finally got an attorney who cut a deal to get me out. All this cost me a lot of money. Just in case you haven't noticed, most governments consider committing crimes against prisoners entirely normal. What's a prison for, anyway? The UK is just like the US.
  • Surprisingly engaging

The trailers made this look boring, but gotta say, I found it powerful and engrossing. Also, makes for a great double feature with DUNKIRK, which is a very different take on the same timeframe.
