In Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig reveals herself to be a bold new cinematic voice with her directorial debut, excavating both the humor and pathos in the turbulent bond between a mother and her teenage daughter. Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) fights against but is exactly like her wildly loving, deeply opinionated and strong-willed mom (Laurie Metcalf), a nurse working tirelessly to keep her family afloat after Lady Bird's father (Tracy Letts) loses his job. Set in Sacramento, California in 2002, amidst a rapidly shifting American economic landscape, Lady Bird is an affecting look at the relationships that shape us, the beliefs that define us, and the unmatched beauty of a place called home.

  • Almost Great

Could have been great instead of just okay. For some reason the writer/director needed to inject all sorts of political and social commentary into the film, which was entirely unnecessary to the story. No matter what your beliefs, these things became a distraction. That said, if you are pro-choice, anti-law, anti-republican, anti-church, anti-religion, anti-capitalism, anti-private school, anti-authority, and love having a rich 30-something pound their beliefs down your throat, this film is for you. I can see why big Hollywood loved it.
  • Why all the hate??

This movie is truly a masterpiece, amazing acting, and a beautiful story. It is hard to understand why people are labeling this movie as an angsty teen movie, it is the insight to a familiar life. I feel everyone could relate to part of this and if you thought it was boring, You definitely shouldn’t watch Darkest Hour. 🙄🙄

This film is truly wonderful. Such amazing writing. One of the best films from last year (or any year). A best picture in my book.
  • Great movie but not flawless

The chemistry between ladybird and her mom was what made this movie so great. It was a story about a girl understanding love. Finding what it means for her home, family and what it means romantically. Ladybird is a fun character that you want to see more of and the way she interacts with the works around her is pretty funny. She is vulnerable yet independent and just trying to figure things out before she graduates. The movie felt real and every character was fully developed to where you felt like you knew them. The only thing I thought felt off with this movie was the plot structure. I felt like a lot of the movie was building up to the climax and then after the climax there was not a perfect conclusion. It’s up to you to decide if that is a good or bad thing, but I felt like some things were dragged out a little too long and other important things were cut kinda short at the end.
  • Perfection!!!

This is the best coming of age movie I have ever seen. Greta Gerwig's debut film is detailed and beautifully relatable. Every scene is its own work of art, meticulously scripted and thought out. The film is truly flawless! Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf give amazing performances in such subtle ways. I have never witnessed such an accurate portrayal of a mother/daughter relationship on screen before. The film is so entrancing and real that you forget it is an actual movie. I would give it more than 5 stars if I could.
  • It's watchable.

I like movies that aren't of the cookie cutter variety. This was not and I liked it for that reason. A cast that isn't that well known. But nothing really that dramatic or thought provocking. I pretty much had it figured out before the end. All the ratings giving it raves? I agree to disagree.

  • Details Matter

Okay so what really really bothers me about Lady Bird is that the movie takes place over the span of almost a year, but she is wearing the same nail polish the ENTIRE FILM.
